A scandal has arisen of late and not, for a change, at the club but in our sleepy Rockwood neighbourhood of Victoria. It is one of those things that one normally would cringe at if it were not more or less right on our doorstep.

A few weeks ago someone passing my chair, I am not sure who, whispered “Naysayer” at me in a very aggressive way. Now I can take the thrust and parry at the club as well as any other mem for it usually falls from me like water off of a duck’s back, but not this. This stung. To accuse your Major of punching holes in other’s ideas and plans seems cruel and unusual in the extreme. However after some digging I think I now know why I was so hurtfully singled out.
I mentioned before that the club is filled with more eccentrics per square foot than anywhere else except perhaps a circus or parliament.
“This club is nothing more than a tedious, irrelevant and frivolous waste of space.”
Many of the mems around me appeared to swoon at this statement from the guest of honour at this week’s rightly semi-famous Speakers’ Luncheon. To say the man was just this side of a nihilist would not be a stretch.
I was thinking the other day about my great-uncle Jim, who was married to my great-aunt Jeanette. What a character. He was 60 when he married Jeanette, who was well past 50 if she was a day.
