It was announced today that the Tug Boat union is about to go on strike. Now obviously the islands surrounding us will be terribly affected and not in a good way. Sigh. Not unlike the current Teachers strike, I ask the question again: What is an essential service?

Would the the public be better served if in these cases the two parties are locked into rooms until they come to a solution. After the first day, the doughnuts would be cut off. The second,  the cancellation of any sweets at all. By the third, only water and baby carrots with an occasional pickle. By the fourth it would I contend, all be over but for a mad dash to the nearest Tim Hortons.

Also the public should have access to the whole plan. By that I mean, the entire package  including dental, medical, pensions, and all extras outside of just hourly pay. Also how much is the company making, including salaries, pensions, extras etc to the top cheeses. That seems to me the only way to truly tell what is what.

There is a rumour about a local union that won a contract which included travel time expenses if the union members were a certain number of km out of town. It was so lucrative an extra that many mems moved that many km from the city in order to take advantage of that extra.

Couldn’t be true, surely.
